The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 6, Calabar, the Cross River State capital, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, has issued a rallying call to men of the Nigeria Police under the Command to curb the rise in crime in the four states of Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi and Rivers.
He made the call at the Command Headquarters in Calabar during an address to the four Commissioners under his Command.
The AIG addressed certain areas of improved operations within the Command to checkmate crimes such as cultism, post-election crises and kidnapping that are on the rise, particularly in Rivers State.
Below are excerpts from the briefing:
Disturbing and Increasing Rate of Crime: Regrettably, there has been increase in the rate of crime and this calls for immediate strategies to be specifically devised by all of you in your respective states with a view to finding lasting solutions. From my observation, kidnapping and cultism are crimes that have been on the rise in the Zone. Particularly, Rivers State Command is becoming increasingly notorious for this.
In this light, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State must act convincingly by way of showing special crime fighting abilities to overwhelm and put the situation under control. This situation has made the Inspector General of Police to make constant phone calls to me as he is not in any way impressed.
Stop and Search: This must be intensified and geared towards the recovery of arms, ammunition, explosives and other incriminating items that may have been stocked for the purpose of perpetrating violence during the electioneering period.
Raiding of Black Spots and Criminal Hideouts: This should be intensified and reports made to my office. All the arms lost by our Policemen before and during the electioneering period must be recovered forthwith.
DPOs and Heads of Formations to Wake Up: I am closely monitoring the performance of every DPO and Heads of Formations in your respective commands. No Officer should allow his domain to be made a hide-out for criminals. They must be seen to dominate their jurisdictions and exude convincing crime prevention and detection skills. There may be need for me to carry out inter-state transfers within Zone 6 Command to change officers that are not performing up to my expectation.
Zero Tolerance for Corruption: I have an allergy for corruption and will therefore deal decisively with officers who indulge in corrupt practices. You must warn all your officers and men to eschew any sharp and corrupt acts that will drag the image of The Nigeria Police into disrepute. My “X” Squad Team has commenced monitoring within the Zone and the names of all Officers and men found wanting in their conduct is being compiled for appropriate disciplinary actions. I must emphasize that bail remains free for all cases.
Professional Conduct: You must enjoin all officers and men under you to be professional in the performance of their Police duties. The members of the public that we serve must be treated courteously and not be brutalized.
Monitoring of Hotels: The State Intelligence Bureau in your respective Commands must intensify their surveillance on hotels. The hotels must submit their guests’ lists for scrutiny. The Officers-in-Charge of your State Intelligence Bureau should report any hotel that is not complying with this order to you for raiding to be conducted in its premises as criminals most times take cover in the hotels.
Traffic Control: All your DPOs should ensure that their Divisional Traffic Officers work towards reducing the traffic jams always experienced in the metropolis especially in Port Harcourt. The Divisional Traffic Officers must personally leave their offices to ensure regular flow of vehicles during the peak hours.
The Zonal Police Chiefs also seized the opportunity to seek for cooperation of members of the public in the fight against crime and criminality. He urged all law abiding citizens to go about their business without let or hindrance and warned all perpetrators of crime to expect the full wrath a rejuvenated Nigeria Police.
