The Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, southern Nigeria, Professor Rosamund Green Osahagulu, was Thursday night abducted by unidentified gunmen on her way home in Port Harcourt after close of work.
Ignatius Ajuru University of Education is the second Rivers State owned university. The other one is Rivers State University of Science and Technology, RSUST.
Professor Osahagulu was appointed the Vice Chancellor by the immediate past administration of former Governor Chibuike Amaechi after upgrading the institution from College of Education to University of Education.
Detailed information about her kidnap remained sketchy on Friday morning.
The university authorities and the police are yet to officially issue a statement on the incident.
When journalists visited the university campus located at Rumuolumeni axis of Port Harcourt this morning, the atmosphere was forlorn and top management of the school was holed up in an emergency meeting to appraise the incident before coming out with an official statement on it.
A call made to the Spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, Ahmad Muhammad was not answered.
Kidnappings in the state have been on the rise, prompting the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, to decry the worsening situation in Zone 6 command, comprising Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Ebonyi.
Arase has, therefore, suspended annual leave for officers and men, directing the commands to stem the tide immediately.
