Alaafin Turns 77


The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi, will mark is 77th birthday on October 15, 2015. A prominent traditional ruler in Yorubaland and Nigeria, Oba Adeyemi was born on October 15, 1938, he was educated at St. Andrews Practicing School, Oyo, 1944-46; Ansar Ud-Deen Primary School, Iseyin, 1946-47 and Ake Primary School, Alake’s Palace, Abeokuta, 1948; Boys Methodist School, Obalende/Tinubu Methodist School, Lagos, 1949-54 and St. Gregory’s College, Lagos. He ascended to the throne of his fore fathers in 1970. Having spent 55 years on the throne, he is considered as one of the longest reigning kings in Nigeria.

He worked with Ramson and Brothers Company in Lagos in 1960 before he joined the Royal Exchange Assurance Company as a Clerical Officer. Appointed to the royal throne as the Alaafin of Oyo. He was the first Chancellor of the University of Sokoto (now Usman Dan Fodio University) in 1978.
He was made Justice of Peace in 1979. He got the national honour of the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic(CFR). He also holds the traditional title of Iku Baba Yeye, Alase Ikeji Orisa.
