Chelsea’s Italian manager Antonio Conte believes his side deserved to win their final group game against Atletico Madrid.
The Blues were forced to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge thereby losing top spot in Group C to AS Roma who finished with a superior head to head over Chelsea despite the sides being tied on 11 points apiece.
“It was a good game. I think we deserved to win the game when you create so many chances, some important chances, you should win,” Conte told BT Sports.
“We went 1-0 down but we tried to win, we must be pleased as it was a really tough group.
“We tried to play our game and win. In the first half we tried to push, we created many chances to score and we conceded a goal from a corner.
“When you play this way and create so much you must be satisfied. Our opponent won’t be happy to play against us.
“Atletico in the past played a fantastic Champions League.”
On the heroics of Atletico Madrid’s keeper Jan Oblak, the Italian said: “The goalkeeper was the best player for them and in other circumstances we could be more accurate to finish.”
Oblak made eight outstanding saves to keep Chelsea forwards Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata out during the encounter.
Conte however stated that his side will be ready to take on any team in the knock out stages despite finishing second in Group C.
Should Liverpool win their group, Chelsea would face Besiktas, Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain in the next round.
“When you play this competition and you go through you must be ready to face the best teams.
“We can play against PSG, Barca or Besiktas, you have to be ready. It is a fantastic competition, the best, and you have to be ready for everything.”
