UYO—One of two men accused of defiling an 11-year-old girl in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has said he loves her, but did not know her age, while the other man said he slept with her just once.
Both men are currently cooling their heels in Police cell at Ikot Akpanabia, headquarters of Akwa Ibom State Police Command.
The victim was said to have been lured by one Glory to the house of a 65-year-old man, Okon Edet, who defiled her, while his accomplice, Akan Ebong, a 27-year-old man living in the neighbourhood, also took advantage of the girl’s vulnerability and slept with her, while she was begging him for money to transport her home.
The two suspects admitted on interrogation to committing the offence and pleaded for clemency, pledging that they will turn a new leaf if let off the hooks.
Edet said: “My mother and my wife died four years ago and I have not remarried since then.
“I was drunk, so I don’t know what happened. But I love the girl and I slept with her. I don’t know her age.”
The suspect, a commercial motorcycle rider, claimed that all his children were dead and he was living alone and also does not know the parents of the victim or where she lives.
Also, Ebong confessed that he only slept once with the minor when she came to the vicinity to hawk oranges for her mother.
He said: “I only slept with her once. When I saw the girl selling, she came to me and begged for money and I gave her. That was in July 2017.
“This year, when I saw her, she said the person she is living with does not have money.”
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Odiko Macdon, said a formal complaint was logged with the Police on the defilement of the minor which led to the arrest of the suspects, describing the incident as odious.
According to him, investigations into the incident were on-going and the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.
His words: “It is unacceptable for an elderly man to have carnal knowledge of the minor. Even when the girl kept on bleeding and shouting, he refused to let go of her.
“A complaint was logged, leading to their arrest. They will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”
