Infidelity: Everyone deserves a second chance

23

Dear Bunmi,

Being unfaithful is a partner’s worst nightmare. Until you ‘ve been there, you can’t say “once a cheat always a cheat,” and I agree with most of the advice you give to your readers on moving on after your partner cheated. It depends on the person and the reason the relationship went wrong. A year ago, I cheated on my husband. It was a horrible time for all involved. Our marriage seemed to be going downhill at the time and I felt a little lost and depressed and someone was there who provided a friendly ear and it developed from there.

It was a relief when, in spite of this fling, my husband took me back because he loves me and we have now been together nearly 12 years. Although I didn’t feel I deserved a chance, he wanted our relationship to work. It’s been a long, hard lesson to learn and I’m thankful we’re still together and the family well-grounded.

I know for a fact that I will never, ever stray again. Everyone deserves a second chance.

Dear Nifemi,

I’m glad your story had a happy ending. Sadly, most cheats don’t have such forgiving partners. The best thing to do is give cheating a wide berth. So many marriages have been ruined due to the holier-than-thou stance of the ‘innocent’ partners, even where such partners were serial adulterers that were lucky not to have been caught. Yet!
