There are indications that the Osun State government may announce the new Ooni of Ife today as police tightens security in Ile-Ife. Already, the Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase have already ordered his men to provide water tight security in the ancient city.
The late Ooni, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse 11, was reported dead on July 28, 2015 in a London hospital at the age of 85 but the news was refuted by the Royal traditional council of Ile Ife who claimed that he is alive and in good health. His demise was officially announced by the Ife High Chiefs when they visited the governor of Osun State, Nigeria, Mr Rauf Aregbesola on Wednesday August 12 2015 at the governor’s office in the state capital, Osogbo.
Since Friday October 22, there had been tension in the Ile -Ife as news filtered that the state government may announce the occupier of the stool considered to be the most important stool in Yorubaland, as whoever occupies the stool of Ooni, will be the custodian of the tradition and culture of the Yoruba race.
Already, 21 contenders had been jostling for the throne. A court case said to be stalling the choice of a new monarch was dismissed on Thursday by Justice Adepele Ojo of Osun state judiciary.
