Bukola Saraki, a former governor of Kwara State, has been sworn into office as the president of the 8th Senate, while Ike Ekweremadu emerged the deputy Senate President.
Mr. Saraki of the All Progressives Congress, APC, defeated his party’s preferred candidate, Ahmed Lawan, to emerge the Senate president. He won the Presidency unopposed by 57 of 108 Senators, with 51 Senators, including Sen. Ahmed Lawan, absent.
Ekweremadu of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, beat Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume of the All Progressives Congress in an election held at the National Assembly today.
Ekweremadu polled 50 votes as against Ndume’s 20 votes. He has been declared deputy senator of the 8th Assembly.
Other Senators were reportedly at the International Conference Centre at the time Saraki was declared President.
